You open your textbook the night before a quiz, and the whole chapter looks the same. Every sentence feels important, so you end up rereading the same pages and hoping something sticks. By the time you close the book, you still can't say what the chapter was actually about.
A faster, calmer fix is to use color-coding as one of your go-to study methods: you give each color one job, then highlight your textbook chapter by what each part is doing — a definition, an example, a cause, a step — so the page sorts itself into things you can actually study.
What color-coding a chapter actually means
Most students highlight in one color, and they highlight way too much. A page glowing yellow tells you nothing, because everything looks equally important.
Color-coding flips that. Instead of marking what feels important, you mark what each sentence is — its job in the chapter. A definition is doing a different job than an example, and an example is doing a different job than a cause-and-effect explanation.
When each color means one job, your brain can group ideas instead of memorizing a wall of words. You're not coloring to make it pretty — you're sorting.
Pick a color key before you highlight
This is the move most people skip, and it's the one that makes the whole thing work. Decide what each color means before you touch the page.
Keep it to three or four colors so you can actually remember the key. Here's a simple one that works for almost any subject:

- Blue = steps or sequences. Numbered processes, timelines, or "first… then… finally" passages.

The study method: how to color-code a chapter step by step
Run these moves in order. The goal isn't a rainbow page — it's a page you can study from in half the time.

Read one section first, then highlight. Read a full section with no marker in your hand. You can't tell a definition from an example until you've seen how they fit together. Highlighting on the first read is how pages end up glowing — you mark everything because you don't know yet what matters.

Highlight only the trigger words, not whole paragraphs. When you go back through, mark the few words that do the job: the term itself in yellow, the phrase "this leads to" in pink, the example sentence in green. If half your paragraph is colored, you're back to highlighting everything. Aim for the smallest mark that still tells you the job.

Match every color to its job in your key — no freelancing. If you find a cause buried in the middle of an example, the cause still gets pink. The color follows the job, not where the sentence sits. This is what keeps your page honest when you review it later.

- Evaporation and condensation — the key terms — get yellow.
- "For example, water on a hot sidewalk dries up" gets green, because it's an example of evaporation.
- "When water vapor cools, it turns back into liquid" gets pink, because it's a cause-and-effect: cooling causes condensation.
- "First the water evaporates, then it condenses, then it falls as rain" gets blue, because it's a sequence of steps.
Now the page tells you a story at a glance: yellow words are what you must be able to define, pink shows the why, blue shows the order, and green proves you can spot it in real life. At the top you write: "The water cycle = water moving between liquid and vapor in a repeating loop."
If more than about a third of a page is colored, you're highlighting too much. Go back and keep only the trigger words — the term, not the whole sentence around it.
